SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- State Senator Pat Wiggins (D-Santa Rosa) has introduced a bill (SB 1167) aimed at strengthening California's anti-steering law regulating the auto insurance industry.

The bill, introduced Feb. 7, requires insurance companies to first learn whether the claimant has already selected a repair shop before starting any discussion of repairs. If the claimant has chosen a shop, the insurer then cannot discuss the use of a direct repair/preferred program provider for auto body repair.

The proposed legislation has the support of the Collision Repair Association of California.
