LANSING, Mich. --- Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land announced that starting Jan. 22 the state stopped allowing illegal immigrants from getting driver's licenses. The new policy also prohibits the issue of state driver's licenses to people who are in the country legally but are not permanent U.S. residents. The state Legislature is now considering whether to permit exemptions for those on temporary work visas or student visas. The policy change was prompted by an opinion issued in December by Attorney General Mike Cox.
