WHITE MARSH, Md.
--- General Motors Corp. today began production on its advanced hybrid transmission at its plant near Baltimore, the Detroit News reported.
This two-mode hybrid transmission will be used in the 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid and the 2008 GMC Yukon Hybrid. Compared to their non-hybrid versions, these two SUVs will offer a 50 percent improvement in city driving fuel efficiency. Overall fuel efficiency will improve 31 percent.
GM invested $118 million to prepare the Baltimore Transmission Plant for production of the hybrid transmission. The automaker's assembly plant in Arlington, Texas, will begin building the hybrid vehicles next month.
