NORTHBROOK, IL – On the heels of the Sierra Club’s partnership with the Donlen Corporation to reduce environment-polluting carbon emissions in its Cool Cities campaign, the two organizations have announced a new Environmental Leadership Award. The honor will recognize a company that raises industry standards in carbon reduction and is being launched with Automotive Fleet magazine. It will be awarded this fall.

“As we as an industry provide more incentives like this recognition, we and the Sierra Club and Automotive Fleet magazine hope to make a gradual, yet powerful impact in cleaner air and carbon-conscious decision making across America,” said Gary Rappeport, CEO of Donlen. “Joining together, we are in a position to improve air quality and create more cost-effective solutions for fleet decision makers.”

Donlen and Sierra Club recently announced a partnership to provide vehicle fleet managers, as well as anyone interested in monitoring their vehicle’s carbon output, with Donlen’s Carbon Calculator tool, at The innovation provides a full picture of carbon costs and economics related to maintenance, fuel consumption, and emissions for specific vehicles. For example, the tool calculates that a hybrid vehicle can cost 22 percent less to operate, and emits 46 percent less global warming pollution over a three-year period, than the average mid-size sedan.

Glen Brand, director of the Sierra Club’s Cool Cities campaign, which works to get cities across the country to implement clean energy solutions, such as energy efficiency, cleaner vehicles, and renewable power, said, “Green fleets are an important and practical strategy to reducing energy costs, global warming pollution, and our country’s dependence on fossil fuels,” he said.
