DENVER, Colo. --- Blue Sun Biodiesel, a Colorado-based supplier of the alternative fuel, has proposed a $42 million, four-year biodiesel and synthetic diesel project to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The proposal is in response to a $200 million Department of Energy request for proposals to demonstrate the commercial viability of a biofuels refinery that uses nonfood-based cellulosic feedstocks. If funded, the project will use domestically produced Jatropha feedstock grown in southern Texas. The farm would be co-located with a biorefinery equipped with a biomass thermochemical processing system. The development would generate all of its own electricity and heat, producing 100 percent renewable biodiesel and synthetic diesel fuel (syndiesel). Blue Sun is teaming with Global Clean Energy Holdings, Community Power Corporation, and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory of Golden, Colo., on this project proposal. "Although Jatropha needs years of development work, the success of this project will help Blue Sun secure a continuous supply of biodiesel feedstock that meets our stringent quality requirements," said Blue Sun CEO Jeff Probst. "We expect this four-year project to fully validate the potential for producing over 200 million gallons of Jatropha biodiesel and syndiesel per year." Blue Sun Biodiesel's fuel is made from pure vegetable oils. The company develops and produces biodiesel energy crops such as canola-type oilseeds grown by Blue Sun farmer cooperatives, and is currently implementing advanced production and distribution facilities.
