WASHINGTON, D.C. --- U.S. Senators passed a major energy bill last Thursday that would increase average fuel economy by 40 percent to 35 miles per gallon for cars, SUVs and pickup trucks by 2020. The bill also would create new laws against price-gouging and require big increases in ethanol production, according to an Associated Press report. The bill passed in a late-night vote, 65-27. The House is expected to consider the legislation this week.
