PHOENIX, AR – The state of Arizona is allowing drivers of three hybrid car models to utilize High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes on state highways, even if those cars only have one occupant, according to The Business Journal of Phoenix. The Arizona Department of Transportation and Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano said that Honda Insight, Honda Civic Hybrid, and Toyota Prius owners can get special state stickers to let them use carpool lanes on highways.

The measure does not include hybrid SUVs.

Arizona State Sen. Robert Blendu, said the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency would only sign off on the three small Honda and Toyota hybrids for the HOV lanes and not the larger vehicles. The three approved vehicles are in the compact and subcompact category, according to the report. Blendu said lawmakers explored the idea of allowing more fuel-efficient and hybrid vehicles to use HOV lanes previously but need federal approval.
