Device Designed to Measure Moisture Problems in Alt-Fuel Vehicles

NEW YORK --- A new device from Karl Fischer is designed to provide a reliable means for measuring moisture content in engines and turbines in alt-fuel vehicles.
Growing interest in alternative fuels research has prompted the need for such a product, according to the trade journal Control Engineering. That's because moisture problems can lead to plugged fuel filters and reduced lubricity. Moreover, ethanol is hygroscopic and absorbs airborne moisture. Water in biodiesel can promote bacterial contamination.
The testing process involves placing a measured sample of the fuel in the machine and adding a reagent containing iodine. The iodine reacts with the water in the sample, and the water is analyzed for the total charge as measured by current and time. The sample required ranges from 0.5 to 5 grams, depending on the moisture content.
The Aquacounter AQ-300 coulometric Karl Fischer titrator is designed to perform this analysis quickly and easily, the manufacturer said.
