EVANSVILLE, IN — Atlas Van Lines now requires background checks on all of its permanent employees. The new Labor Certification Initiative is designed to address concerns about the relocation industry that include backgrounds, work history, and qualifications of the workers who help van operators load and deliver customer belongings. Atlas implemented its permanent employee background check policy in May 2005. Using a third-party, Web-based check system, Atlas agents screen potential employees for criminal histories that include convictions of sex crimes, which would make them ineligible for work. So far, 1,700 applicants have been screened.
