HONOLULU – Gov. Linda Lingle vetoed a measure that would have lowered the minimum age for commercial driver licenses to 18 from 21. The state legislature passed the bill in April. It was backed by transportation companies facing a bus and commercial truck driver shortage. The state Department of Transportation opposed the measure, saying that allowing younger drivers to operate large vehicles, such as buses and big rigs, was a safety hazard.
