AUBURN HILLS, MI — DaimlerChrysler announced that it began limited commercial production in December of a diesel mild-hybrid 2005 Dodge Ram HEV truck. Fleet deliveries are scheduled for first quarter 2005. Called the “contractor special,” it will feature stationary generator capability. The Ram's electric motor will assist the diesel engine at low speeds with a start/stop feature, but will not propel the vehicle on its own. Built on the Ram Heavy Duty (2500/3500) chassis, the mild hybrid uses an integrated starter-alternator hybrid system to supplement a Cummins 5.9L turbodiesel. Dodge will not offer a gasoline version.
