PURCHASE, NY — Frederick Lee "Fred" Sutherland, regional commercial manager of the Northeast Region for General Motors Fleet & Commercial Operations, died unexpectedly at Danbury Hospital in Connecticut on Saturday, Jan. 22. He was 49. Sutherland was born in Pontiac, Mich., son of the late Fred A. and Catherine (Hewitt) Sutherland. He graduated from General Motors Institute (Kettering University) with a bachelors degree in Industrial Management. He started his career at General Motors in 1973. Sutherland was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, and golfing. In addition to his wife of 23 years, Paula, he is survived by his children, Jason, who is currently a student at the University of Illinois; Rebecca, and Douglas; his sister, Susan O. Cardwell and her husband, Dan of Springfield, Mo.; and his brother, Gregg Sutherland of Florida. He is also survived by his father and mother-in-law, George and Jane Sinner of Fargo, ND. In lieu of flowers, a scholarship fund will be set up at Brookfield High School in Fred Sutherland's memory. Donations may be sent to the "Fred L. Sutherland Scholarship Fund," 5 Stony Farm Lane, Brookfield, CT 06804. Memorial Contributions in his memory may also be made to the American Heart Association, 5 Brookside Drive, Wallingford, CT 06492.
