A state audit report of Missouri Western State College recommends closer monitoring of the college’s fleet of vehicles, according to the St. Joseph News-Press newspaper. The audit report, released March 16 by state auditor Claire McCaskill, documents the three fiscal years ending June 30, 2003. School officials say they’ll continue cost-analysis studies of owned and leased vehicles used on and off campus. During the audit period, Western spent $197,000 on car rentals and $212,000 in travel expenses. Western also owns 40 vehicles, used mostly for maintenance. The report doesn’t say those costs are exorbitant but does recommend performing a cost-benefit analysis on leasing versus owning vehicles and recommends more accurate expense and mileage reports.
