Virginia will join the E-Z Pass automatic highway tolling system in use in nine East Coast states, allowing users of Virginia's Smart Tag system to breeze through toll booths all the way up to Maine, the Associated Press reported. The arrangement is a convenient development for drivers in northern Virginia who have Smart Tag transponders but travel to Maryland and have to negotiate that state's E-Z Pass toll lanes, AP said. Out-of-state drivers whose E-Z Pass tags will work in Virginia's Smart Tag lanes will also benefit by the time it goes into effect, probably by next fall, AP said. Besides Maine and Maryland, other states now in the E-Z Pass consortium include New York, New Jersey, West Virginia, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Delaware.
