Chase Manhattan Automotive Finance Corp. of Florida was ordered to pay $28 million to a woman whose car was struck by an automobile leased from Chase. The driver of the leased car was dropped from the lawsuit after declaring bankruptcy, and two insurance companies that agreed to pay $1.3 million in damages were also dropped from the suit, leaving Chase Manhattan the sole defendant. The plaintiff's attorney claimed the $28 million verdict was the largest single award in a personal injury case returned by a jury in Rhode Island.
