Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. announced July 30, 2002 that it plans to sell its first fuel cell car next year, two years earlier than the original plan for a launch in 2005. Nissan says it is working with partner Renault SA of France in fuel cells. Both Toyota and Honda have said they plan to market fuel cell vehicles by the end of the year, although they have noted that the high cost of developing the vehicles could mean that only very limited numbers would be sold on a lease basis. Nissan said cus-tomers are likely to be government bodies, research institutions, and energy companies. A fuel cell passenger car has yet to hit the market, although DaimlerChrysler AG first sold a limited series of fuel cell buses in 2000.
