BP Amoco announced that it can supply ultra low sulfur diesel fuel to fleets that desire to use it. The fuel, called BP ECD, is an emission-control heavy-duty diesel fuel that can aid air quality without compromising vehicle performance. The Environmental Protection Agency has proposed sulfur reductions for diesel to allow advanced emission control systems on diesel engines that would be poisoned by the level of sulfur in currently available diesel fuel. According to BP, ECD diesel contains not more than 30 parts per million (ppm) of sulfur, as against the regulated maximum of today’s fuels, which have a 500 ppm maximum level. Use of the fuel in existing engines allows immediate moderate reductions of emissions. Used in conjunction with advanced emission control technology, the fuel can allow emission reductions exceeding 90 percent.
