Saturn has introduced the 2003 Saturn ION sedan and quad coupe. Both the four-door sedan and the “quad coupe” — so-called because of its dual rear-access doors (RADs) — are built on the new General Motors Delta global small-car architecture. The ION models offer three transmissions along with a powerplant. The 2.2-liter Ecotec is mated to a five-speed manual transmission that is standard on all models, with the VTi offered as an option on base and mid-level sedans and base quad coupes, and the premium five-speed automatic optional on up-level models. Safety features for the ION sedan and quad coupe include the combination of dual-stage front driver and passenger airbags, front seat belt pre-tensioners, seat belt retractors, along with available electronic traction control, antilock braking system (ABS), OnStar, and head-curtain airbags. The Saturn ION sedan and quad coupe will compete in a small-car market that accounts for sales of more than 2 million units per year, about 14 percent of the total U.S. new-vehicle market. Approximately 30 percent of small-car purchasers are first-time new-vehicle buyers. The new series of ION cars will debut in the fourth quarter of 2002.
