International Truck and Engine Corp is close to perfecting fuel delivery and emissions system technology that will enable small displacement, clean-running diesel engines to be installed in light-duty trucks, according to an article in Automotive News. The engines will meet EPA emissions standards up to 2010, said CEO John Horne just before speaking to the Detroit Economic Club last week. But the article says no one has figured out how to meet California’s Low Emission Vehicle II standards, which take effect in 2004 and present a de facto ban on the use of diesels in cars and light trucks in the state. Horne said Ford Motor Co. plans to use a Navistar-built 4.5-liter V-6 diesel in 2007 for a domestic truck or sport/utility, but a Ford spokesman would not confirm or deny Ford’s diesel plans.
