As part of a one-month pilot program that ended Nov. 30, 2001, Dollar Rent a Car has been requiring customers at 14 airports, including Reagan National and Baltimore Washington International airports, to put their thumbs on an inkless pad. The fingerprint that is captured is attached to the rental agreement and will be kept in a database at the Tulsa headquarters for seven years. Dollar said that it may be extended to all 260 Dollar rental locations by Jan. 1. Dollar Vice President of Quality Assurance Jim Senese said in an article in the Washington Post that the company decided to fingerprint customers after racking up more than $1 million per year in expenses associated with stolen and damaged cars. The customers responsible for the damage were often difficult to locate because many used false driver’s licenses and stolen credit cards.
