Microsoft has developed a system, “My Car,” for commuters to get the latest information on traffic in Seattle without waiting for radio reports. The service delivers live traffic reports to cell phones, and can be tailored to report on traffic in specific areas or communities and by day-part. The new service is part of the overall upgrade of Microsoft’s MSN Internet service, MSN 7. There is no direct fee for the traffic alerts, but Microsoft hopes to encourage consumers to look at other services that can be offered for a monthly fee added to phone, cable, or Internet bills. My Car gathers traffic information from various sources and is formatted in a way that can be displayed on a variety of electronic devices. More services are to be introduced in the coming months.
