DaimlerChrysler AG and Union Pacific Corp. said on July 31, 2001, they formed a new company that will use the Internet to help cut vehicle delivery time in North America. The new company, Insight Network Logistics, set to become a wholly owned subsidiary of Union Pacific Corp., will track vehicle shipments from assembly plants to dealers. Insight Network Logistics will help the Chrysler Group achieve its targeted 25 percent reduction in vehicle delivery time within 12 months, DaimlerChrysler said. Increased efficiencies from the new company should also help cut Chrysler costs by about $280 million over the next six years. Insight Network Logistics will be based in the Detroit area and expects to begin providing logistical services by early in the fourth quarter of this year, the companies said.
