Florida's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) welcomed eight new additions to its growing fleet of hybrid vehicles, according to the Web site SolarAccess.com on May 6. The State of Florida currently owns more than 900 alternative-fuel vehicles, shaping the market for fuel-efficient travel and clean air technology. DEP owns 45 hybrid cars and more than 200 alternative-fuel vehicles. With DEP's hybrids attaining better gas mileage than conventional vehicles, the agency will save tens of thousands of dollars in fuel costs over the lifetime of the cars. Nationally, there were 43,435 U.S. registrations for hybrid vehicles last year -- a 25 percent increase from 2002. Among the states, Florida had the third largest number of hybrid registrations. The Department's new hybrid cars will be used by environmental regulators and the Florida Park Service.
