CEI, under the name of its DriverCare safety offering, announced on February 9 that it had joined forces with the National Safety Council, NASCAR Busch Grand National Series professional race driver Jimmy Kitchens, the U.S. Department of Labor, and Cavalier Home Builders, Inc. to offer free driver safety training in concert with NASCAR’s most exciting races and venues. The goal of the program is to provide free classroom training to 1,000 professional drivers in 2004 in order to influence a reduction in traffic injuries and fatalities through education of sound defensive driving. The training is supported with a Susan Harwood Training Grant from the Occupational Safety and Heath Administration (OSHA) and overseen by project coordinator Ben Langley, safety director for Cavalier Home Builders, Inc. The Safety Wins program will commence on Tuesday, February 10 at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona, FL during the Daytona 500 race week. Subsequent sessions will be held at other NASCAR tracks such as the Texas Motor Speedway, Talladega Superspeedway, and Dover International Speedway, among others. If you are a fleet, risk or safety manager and would like more information on how your drivers can participate in this free training opportunity please send an email to “Safety Wins through DriverCare” at [email protected] with your name, company and contact information. The Safety Wins program is designed to address the leading cause of work related death in the United States: motor vehicle crashes, and provide free refresher driver training courses conducted by National Safety Council Certified Trainers. Driver Jimmy Kitchens will present information on what it takes to be a safe NASCAR driver featuring all his gear and a cut-away show car featuring the DriverCare logo. Training sessions will include three hours of classroom education and one hour of safety awareness information that cross-references highway and NASCAR safety. NASCAR has offered to provide credentials to each training group to tour the garage and pit area as well as meet the racing crews and drivers present at the time of training.
