The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently gave the 2020 Hyundai Sonata, and Sonata Hybrid, its 5-star overall safety rating—the highest rating a vehicle can receive.

The 2020 Sonata was awarded for its advanced safety technologies, including forward collision warning with automatic braking and having lane departure warning as standard equipment, according to Hyundai. The new Sonata features a range of active and passive safety technologies. Passengers benefit from a comprehensive nine-airbag set-up, while a sophisticated Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) works to alert drivers to things they might miss while driving.

The sedan features Hyundai’s latest SmartSense ADAS, a series of sensors and systems, to potentially warn the driver and may take action in the event of a safety incident. Other features of the ADAS system include standard Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist; Lane Keeping Assist; Advanced Smart Cruise Control with Stop and Go; and optional Highway Driving Assist.

The Sonata was already a recipient of the Top Safety Pick award by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
