The Office of Traffic Safety in Nevada recently funded an initiative that put extra patrols on the roadways to crack down on motorists who speed, reports KTVN.

Known as “Joining Forces,” the campaign brought together various law enforcement agencies from Northern Nevada to focus on the speeding problem and the results were significant. Between Jan. 31 and Feb.17, the Nevada Highway Patrol alone wrote 197 speeding tickets — some of those for speeds above a hundred miles an hour, notes the report.

The goal behind the  “Joining Forces” program is not simply to issue citations, but rather to educate drivers about the dangers of speeding—a big concern on Nevada roads. In fact, the state recently enacted stiffer penalties for speeding, boosting the fine to $20 for each mile per hour above the speed limit or proper rate of speed.

Nationwide, speeding remains one of the top roadway safety concerns. Close to 800 people die in speed-related crashes every month. In 2018, more than 9,000 fatalities — 26% of all U.S. crash deaths — were speed-related.
