General Motors Corp. announced Jan. 30, 2003 that it will invest approximately $300 million in its Willow Run (MI) plant to produce a new six-speed rear-wheel-drive automatic transmission. The automaker said the move will preserve at least 577 jobs at the plant, which employs approximately 4,000 hourly and 400 salaried employees. The $300 million investment includes facility renovation, new machinery, equipment, and tooling to support new processes. Construction will begin immediately and be completed in late 2005. The new transmission will be used in GM cars and trucks beginning in 2006.
