Volkswagen of America will offer a five-passenger, coupe-like midsize SUV that's based on its Atlas and will be known as the Atlas Cross Sport as part of its 2020 model year lineup, the automaker has announced.

The 2020 Atlas Cross Sport will offer seating for five, while the larger Atlas offers three rows of seating and can accommodate up to seven people.

Engine choices will include a base 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 235 horsepower or a 3.6-liter V-6 rated at 276 horsepower. Front-wheel drive is standard, and VW's 4Motion all-wheel drive is optional.

Trim levels will include the base S, SE, SEL, SEL R-Line, SEL Premium, and SEL Premium R-Line.

EPA fuel economy ratings for the four-cylinder Atlas Cross Sport have come in at 21 mpg in the city, 24 mpg on the highway, and 22 mpg combined.

Volkswagen showed a concept version of the vehicle at the New York International Auto Show in March. It will be built in Chattanooga, Tenn., at the same factory that builds the Atlas.
