As part of its contact negotiations with the striking Union of Auto Workers, General Motors has proposed producing an electric pickup at a factory scheduled to close next year.
According to a report in Automotive News, the offer is part of $7 billion in investments that includes solutions for factories set to be shut down, along with compensation increases and profit sharing for employees.
The offer would assign production of an electric pickup to the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant and battery cell production to Lordstown Assembly in Ohio.
Earlier this year, Mary Barra highlighted the development of an electric pickup and a $28 million investment in a battery lab at the Global Technical Center in Warren, Michigan.
