Hyundai's 2020 Palisade three-row SUV has earned a Top Safety Pick+ from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety when the midsize SUV is outfitted with optional LED headlights, the institute has announced.

The institute has given 13 Hyundai vehicles a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+, which makes it the most awarded automotive brand by the institute this year.

The 2020 Palisade aced six crash tests conducted by IIHS engineers, scoring good ratings across the board. These included the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraint tests.

But to earn Top Safety Pick+ status, vehicles are also required to capture an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention and be equipped with good headlights.

The 2020 Palisade's standard front crash prevention system garnered a superior rating — with an autobrake system that successfully avoided collisions in both the 12 mph and 25 mph track tests.

Finally, the Palisade's headlights — often an issue for vehicles vying for plus status — also met IIHS criteria.

The Palisade receives Top Safety Pick+ status only when it is equipped with its optional LED projectors. The Palisade's base halogen headlights are rated marginal, which means models equipped with the base headlights don't qualify for the either the Top Safety Pick+ or the lower-tier Top Safety Pick award.
