During a legislative session called by Governor Judy Martz (R), the Montana Senate rejected a 9 percent motor vehicle rental tax on August 10 by a vote of 36-13. The legislature closed the state's $45 million budget gap mostly through spending cuts and funds transfers rather than tax increases. However, it is likely that motor vehicle rental tax increases will be proposed again in January 2003.
