Volkswagen Group of America is recalling nine 2018 Audi luxury sedans and two 2017 models for a possible defect involving the air bags, according to federal records.
Oxidation on the Passenger Occupant Detection System on the connecting cable in the vehicles may cause the software to misdiagnose a malfunction and disable the passenger air bag.
Affected models include the 2018 models of the S5 cabriolet, S5 sportback, S5 coupe, S4 sedan, A5 cabriolet, A5 sportback, and A5 coupe. Additionally, the 2017 and 2018 A4 sedan and A4 allroad have been included.
Audi will begin notifying owners, and dealers will update the air-bag control unit software without charge. The recall is expected to begin on Sept. 15.
Owners may contact Volkswagen's customer service department at 800-893-5298 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's vehicle safety hotline at 888-327-4236.
