Toyota will build a yet-to-be-announced SUV at an Alabama assembly plant that it's sharing with Mazda, the automaker has announced.
With the move, Toyota is keeping production of its Corolla at its Blue Springs, Mississippi, plant. The automaker had initially planned to shift the Corolla to Alabama. Mazda plans to build a yet-to-be-announced crossover at the plant.
Toyota and Mazda have begun construction of Mazda Toyota Manufacturing U.S.A. in Huntsville with plans to begin building vehicles in Alabama in 2021. The plant is now hiring for up to 4,000 jobs.
The two automakers announced in August 2017 that they would jointly fund and build the $1.6 billion joint venture. They expect the plant to produce up to 300,000 vehicles per year.
