The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety recently recognized the 2019 BMW X5 with its Top Safety Pick+, when it's equipped with specific headlights.

The X5 is now the fourth model and third SUV from BMV to earn a 2019 safety award from the institute.

The X5 underwent six rigorous crashworthiness tests conducted by IIHS engineers and scored good ratings across the board. These include the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests.

To capture the coveted Top Safety Pick+, a vehicle must also garner an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention as well as offer available good-rated headlights.

Here again, the midsize luxury SUV met the standards. Not only does the X5 come standard with a superior-rated front crash prevention system, its two optional systems also rate superior.  All three systems demonstrated strong performance, avoiding collisions in 12 mph and 25 mph track tests.

As for the requirement for good-rated headlights, the X5 earned a good rating for headlights that come with the Executive trim or as an option that can be added to other trims.
