Mazda North American Operations is recalling nearly 188,000 2016-2018 Mazda3 vehicles because the windshield wipers may malfunction due to a defective windshield wiper relay.

In the event the windshield wipers become inoperable, the driver's visibility could be reduced which increases the likelihood of a collision.

To fix the problem, Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front body control module with a new module, which uses an improved wiper relay design, at no cost to owners.

The recall begins June 3. Owners may reach Mazda customer service at (800) 222-5500, option 4. Mazda's reference number for this recall is 3219D.
