For the second consecutive year, the Lincoln Continental has captured Top Safety Pick+ recognition from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The large luxury car was put through the paces in six rigorous crashworthiness tests, earning good ratings across the board. Specifically, IIHS trials include the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests.

The Lincoln Continental also boasts a superior rating for its front crash prevention system. Finally, the car’s optional LED headlights garnered a good rating, providing ample lighting on straightaways and most curves. The headlights can also include high-beam assist — a safety feature that is growing in popularity.

However, IIHS notes that the Lincoln’s other headlight variant — high intensity discharge lamps — receive a poor rating because the low beams create excessive glare for drivers of ongoing vehicles.

There are now a total of 31 Top Safety Pick+ and 27 Top Safety Pick vehicles, according to the IIHS. The Continental is the first vehicle from a U.S. manufacturer to earn the highest award for 2019.
