BMW of North America is recalling an estimated 3,500 2018-2019 model vehicles because the capacitors within the TurboCord portable chargers may fail, leading to a possible electrical shock or fire. Both scenarios increase the likelihood of injury or death.
Specifically, the recall includes the 2018 BMW 330e iPerformance, i3 REx, i3 Sport REx, X5 xDrive40e, i3 Sport, and Mini Cooper Countryman SE, and four plug-in hybrid vehicles including the 2019 i8 and i8 Roadsters, 2018-2019 530e iPerformance, 530e xDrive iPerformance, and 740Le xDrive iPerformance vehicles.
To fix the problem, BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the charging cable, and replace it if necessary, at no cost to owners.
Owners can reach BMW customer service at (800) 525-7417.
