Ford Recalls Three Electric Cars

Ford is recalling 50,000 older battery-electric passenger cars from three nameplates, including the Focus Electric, Fusion Energi, and C-Max Energi, due to a possible defect with the 120-volt convenience charging cable that could cause a fire, according to the company.

Ford is recalling 2012 to 2015 Focus Electric compact cars built at the Michigan Assembly Plant from Sept. 15, 2011 to March 14, 2015; 2013 to 2015 Fusion Energi midsize sedans built at the Hermosillo Assembly Plant from Sept. 4, 2012 to March 5, 2015; and 2013 to 2015 C-Max compact cars built at the Michigan Assembly Plant from April 13, 2012 to March 14, 2015.

The recall could affect 50,524 vehicles in North America with the accompanying charging cable, including 49,197 vehicles in the U.S. and 1,327 in Canada. The Ford reference number for the recall is 18S24.

Owners can bring their vehicles to dealerships that will replace the factory-equipped cord with the latest version of the 120-volt cord that includes a thermistor at no cost. The thermistor can identify over-temperature conditions at the plug-outlet interface and will discontinue charging until the temperature decreases to an appropriate level.
