The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the 2018 Mazda CX-9 a five-star overall rating for crashworthiness, after evaluating the mid-size, three-row crossover SUV.
The CX-9 performed well in the government agency’s rigorous collision and pre-collision testing. NHTSA’s safety evaluations are based on how well vehicles withstand a series of crash tests including frontal, side and rollover tests, according to the automaker.
Designed with Mazda’s “Proactive Safety Philosophy” in mind, all 2018 CX-9 models are equipped with standard Smart City Brake Support (SBS)—a technology that can automatically apply the brakes in specific situations below 19 mph. In addition, both Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert are also newly standard for the 2018 models.
The vehicle also features Mazda’s SKYACTIV-BODY, comprised of a ring structure and straight frame rails that help absorb impact—furthering safety for vehicle occupants, Mazda said in a release.
Other key features that enhance safety in the CX-9 include: high beam control, hill launch assist, lane-keep assist, lane departure warning, distance recognition support system and forward obstruction warning, and high beam control.
