Rupert Stadler, Audi's chief executive, has been arrested by German authorities after a judge authorized the arrest because Stadler was considered a risk to flee or obstruct an ongoing investigation around Volkswagen's diesel cheating scandal, according to media reports.

Stadler, 55, is among 70 suspects in a probe by German prosecutors, reports the New York Times.

Volkswagen is expected to appoint an interim leader for its luxury brand today. Stadler is the highest ranking executive with the company who has remained in his role despite his connection to the case.
