Gasoline Prices Flatten Out at $2.97 Per Gallon

The average price of regular unleaded remained steady at $2.97 per gallon over the Memorial Day holiday and could be easing off their spring increase. Crude oil prices have also begun to fall from their three-year high, according to AAA.

Gasoline prices have increased 16 cents since the beginning of May, and motorists are paying the highest prices to full up since 2014, said Jeanette Casselano, AAA spokeswoman.

"At the start of the holiday weekend, reports indicated that OPEC may raise production levels to help ease global supply concerns," Casselano said. "The announcement immediately brought down the price of crude, which has dropped nearly $3 per barrel since Thursday."

Three more states joined the list of 17 states with at least $3 per gallon gasoline. Four other states including Indiana, Maryland, New Mexico, and Massachusetts, are a few pennies from that level.

States with the largest weekly increases included Wisconsis (27 cents), Colorado (26 cents), and Minnesota (25 cents), North Dakota (24 cents).

Meanwhile, the average price of a gallon of diesel increased 1.1 cents to $3.288 per gallon, whcih is 71.7 cents higher than a year ago, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
