Red-Light Runner Collides With Autonomous Waymo Van

A Waymo self-driving car was involved in a three-vehicle crash on May 4 in a busy shopping district of Chandler, Arizona, that was caused by a red-light runner, according to media reports.

The crash occurred when a silver Honda sedan driven by Josiah Bullock ran a red light and swerved to avoid hitting another vehicle. The sedan veered into the opposite lane and collided with a Waymo Chrsyler Pacifica that was in manual mode at the time. The female operator of the self-driving car suffered minor injuries, reports Fox News.

Both vehicles appeared badly damaged. Police released the crash video from Waymo's camera system to ABC15 that shows the silver Honda heading toward the van.

Waymo's self-driving cars have driven over 5 million miles on public roads since 2009. Those cars have been involved in over 30 minor crashes, but have only been responsible for causing one, according to FastCompany.com. That incident took place in 2016 when a Lexus SUV in autonomous mode changed lanes into the path of a public bus. No one was injured.
