SOUTHEND, UK — A truck driver who was sending a mobile-phone text message when he struck and killed a pedestrian at the side of a road was sentenced to five, years in prison on Feb. 14, 2001, according to Associated Press. Judge Daniel Worsley sentenced Paul Browning, 36, who had already admitted to killing the pedestrian by driving dangerously in the June accident but denied that he was using the mobile phone when his truck hit 24-year-old Paul Hammond, who was in a pull-off area of the road.
