BMW's 2019 X2 will be powered by a TwinPower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed transmission to propel BMW's new luxury crossover, the company announced.

BMW provided full details about its 2019 X2 ahead of the vehicle's launch at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January. The vehicle will go on sale in the spring. Pricing will be announced closer to that time.

The vehicle is based on BMW's X1 crossover, and arrives as a more compact package. It will be 3.2 inches shorter (172.2 inches) with the same wheelbase (105.1 inches). Both vehicles seat five adults.

The 2019 X2's engine will make 228 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. It will offer standard full LED headlights and taillights. An M Sport X package will feature a sport automatic transmission and 20-inch wheels.

The X2's standard all-wheel drive xDrive system will include hill descent control.

The luxury crossover will offer an optional Driving Assistance Package that includes lane departure warning, speed limit info, automatic high beams, as well as frontal collision warning and pedestrian warning with automatic braking.

The optional ACC Stop & Go + Active Driving Assistant can maintain a desired speed between 19 and 87 mph at a pre-set distance from the vehicles ahead. Driver assistance features include Park Distance Control, a rear-view camera, and Parking Assistant for parallel parking spaces.

The vehicle will make its global debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on Jan. 15.
