Hyundai is recalling 390,467 2013-2014 Elantra sedan, coupe and GT vehicles, and Kia is recalling 134,366 2012-2014 Forte and Forte Koup vehicles, so dealers can replace the brake pedal stopper pads.

In these cars, the brake pedal stopper pad can deteriorate, allowing the brake light switch plunger to remain extended when the brake pedal is released. As a result, the brake lights can remain illuminated continuously, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Also, the driver might be able to move the shift lever without depressing the brake pedal, or activate the engine management brake pedal override feature.

There will be no charge for the replacement of the defective brake pedal stopper pads.

The Kia recall campaign is expected to begin Jan. 30. Kia’s number for the recall is SC158. Kia can be reached at (800) 333-4542.

The Hyundai recall campaign, which expands a previous recall, is due to start Feb. 8. Hyundai’s number for its recall is 170. Hyundai can be reached at (800) 633-5151.
