Alphabet's mapping and navigation app, Waze, will launch its carpooling service in southern California on June 6 in an expansion of the service that's now available in northern California and Israel.

Waze Carpool allows users to request a ride to carpool with a drive using its mobile app. Riders pay for the cost of gasoline at the IRS reimbursement rate. Unlike Uber and Lyft, Waze Carpool won't take a commission at first, but could take one if the service grows, Josh Fried, Waze's head of carpool, told the Los Angeles Times.

The service will be considered noncommercial, so drivers don't need special insurance or background checks.

The service will be available throughout California.
