The GMC Canyon will also receive an 8-speed transmission and slightly more efficient V-6 that mirror updates announced for its sister Colorado mid-size pickup as well as adding the off-road Terrain X trim grade to the lineup for the 2017 model year.
The Canyon Denali, which was previously announced, joins the Canyon All Terrain X as new trim grades for the 2017-MY. The Terrain X is a special version of the All Terrain package offered on the SLE model. The X adds Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac P255/65R17 all-terrain tires and all-weather floor liners.
Like the Colorado, the 2017 Canyon's V-6 keeps its 3.6L displacement, and improves operating efficiency with a slight bump in power. The new engine produces 308 hp and 275 lb.-ft. of torque compared to the 305 hp and 269 lb.-ft. for the outgoing model.
The new V-6 adds improved variable valve timing for intake and exhaust, improved direct injection and Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation) that disables two cylinders under light throttle applications.
GMC is pairing the engine with an 8-speed Hydra-Matic 8L45 automatic transmission that replaces the outgoing 6L80 6-speed automatic.
