FCA US is recalling 889 2016 model-year Ram 3500, 4500, and 5500 trucks because they’re at risk for losing motive power, increasing the potential for a crash, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported.
The recalled Ram 3500 trucks were manufactured from July 24, 2015, through Jan. 7, 2016. The recalled Ram 4500 and 5500 trucks were manufactured from July 24, 2015, through Oct. 8, 2015.
The transfer case in these vehicles may have been manufactured with a misshapen main output shaft, creating voids that can lead to a shaft fracture. If the main output shaft fractures, the vehicle can lose motive power, NHTSA said. Additionally, the driver may be unable to place the vehicle in “park,” increasing the risk of a vehicle rollaway.
Dealers will replace the transfer case, free of charge. The recall began Aug. 10.
Truck owners can reach FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) customer service at (800) 853-1403. The automaker’s number for this recall is S48.
