Nissan North America is recalling 46,859 2013-2015 model-year LEAF vehicles because of potential brake relay failure, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported.

The electric cars at issue were manufactured from Nov. 19, 2012, to July 31, 2015. During very cold temperatures, the relay inside the electronic brake booster may freeze, requiring the driver to exert more effort to slow down or stop the vehicle, NHTSA said. This condition increases the risk of a crash.

Nissan dealers will reprogram the intelligent brake control unit software, free of charge, to resolve the problem. LEAF owners can reach Nissan customer service at (800) 647-7261.
