Mitsubishi Motors North America is recalling 25,185 2014-2015 model-year Mitsubishi Mirage cars because road salt-linked corrosion might result in delayed deployment of the frontal air bags during a crash, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.

The recall covers Mirage cars manufactured from Aug. 7, 2013, to Sept. 2 of this year. They were all originally sold in, or were at some point registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin or the District of Columbia.

The corrosion can occur if the driver is wearing footwear covered with a mixture of snow and road salt. As the snow begins melting off the boots or shoes, the salty water can soak through the carpet and damage a wiring connector that’s located in a junction box behind a kick panel to the left of the driver’s footrest. Frontal air bag deployment may be delayed as a result of this corrosion.

Dealers will inspect the connectors at issue and replace any that are corroded. Technicians will install a waterproof sheet over the connectors to prevent future corrosion. These repairs will be performed free of charge.

Mirage owners can reach Mitsubishi customer service at (888) 648-7820. The manufacturer’s number for this recall is SR-16-001.
